Reflections on Performance

As we begin to return to a more holistic way of living,I have come to feel that learning the piano, playing the piano, and teaching the piano are not separate activities, but parts of a single process, one that continuously influences itself.

Within that process, there remain many things we do not yet fully understand.

While searching for ways to improve my own playing, I carried a number of questions with me. They were not clearly defined or organized questions, but rather scattered concerns that appeared at different moments of performance and daily work at the instrument.

These concerns included how the body is used, how the structure of the body can be understood through anatomy, and how the brain and nervous system function as the central organizers of movement. At the time, these elements did not present themselves to me as belonging to a single system.

Encountering the Integration Alexander Academy allowed me to recognize that these seemingly separate elements were, in fact, deeply connected. I am currently studying the Integration Piano Method, through which these elements are presented and guided as an integrated whole.

The learning I encountered there not only transformed my approach to piano technique, but also became an important support in moving through long held performance related trauma.

As those changes unfolded, they led to a fundamental shift in how I teach, and in how I relate to music itself.

What had once felt fragmented gradually became integrated, resulting in something that felt entirely new, yet at the same time like a return to my own natural state.

This flow has not remained confined to personal performance. It has begun to take shape as a shared space with others. One expression of this is Integration Piano Week, not as a conclusion, but as part of an ongoing and evolving process.

Within Holistique Pianism, I would like to share, little by little, what I have experienced and observed along this path, without rushing toward fixed conclusions.

Holistique Pianism
